CAMMILLIERI (Nicolas)

Ship Alfred of Salem Cap’ Joseph Felt

[Marseille], 1806.

Dimensions : 375 x 550 mm or ca 21,65 x 14,76 inches.
Wooden frame dimensions : 530 x 695 mm or ca 20,86 x 27,36 inches.

Signed and dated on lower right, titled below, watercolor and gouache on laid paper with gold foil stripe on border.
The frame is from the XIXeth century and could be contemporary of the watercolor (see the remains of leather straps help together by old fashioned nails). Some modern restorations (mostly golden paint).

Splendid and large representation of the ship Alfred, built in 1805 in Salem, Massachusetts.
She was 260 tons later altered to 217 tons for a privateer in 1812. She mounted sixteen guns and carried 100 men.
The crew could have been made up of some black people, as this watercolour seems to show (person dressed in red without a hat, revealing Afro hair). In 1814 the ship was captured by the British.

Condition: One or two minor light stains, some lacks of gold foil stripes on the border.
Overall in very good condition, what may appear as defects are either dust inside the glass or reflections.
