Essai sur les nielles, gravures des orfèvres florentins du XVe siècle.
Paris, Merlin, 1826.
In-8 (225 x 145 mm), burgundy half-maroquin with long-grain corners, spine decorated, untrimmed (Hering).
First edition of this pioneering monograph by Jean Duchesne (1779-1855), curator at the Royal Library's Cabinet des estampes, the first essay on the subject.
It is illustrated with 8 plates hors texte, most of which were printed in the lithographic printing works of Jean-François Villain (1790-1852), lithographer to the Duchess of Berry.
One of two copies printed on straw paper, offering a very rare specimen of this type of paper from the Montgolfier brothers' factory in Annonay.
This vergé de paille paper is used here as the front endpaper for bibliophilic purposes.
