Bibliothèque photographique A. Giraudon. Catalog of the work of Jules Dalou.
Chartres, Imprimerie Durand, 1904.
An in-12 paperback booklet and a strong in-4 album of photographs, black percaline, smooth spine; trace of adhesive tape to the booklet, spine of the album disbound (Period binding).
Very rare photographic catalog of the works of sculptor Jules Dalou (1838-1902), published shortly after his death by Adolphe Giraudon.
It consists of a large volume containing 137 large photographs (265 x 205 mm, silver or albumen prints), and a leaflet listing the works and giving the prices of the photographs. The prints sometimes bear the publisher's dry stamp, and one bears that of the Jules Dalou estate. The list includes two additional works that were crossed out at the time.
Amélie Simier explains the genesis of this photographic catalog in the exhibition catalog Jules Dalou le sculpteur de la République (2013) :
"In order to preserve a record of the works sold and/or distributed, Dalou's executors entrusted the Giraudon firm with systematic photography of his works. The pieces from the studio and some in private hands were thus reproduced in 1903. 136 photographs were taken, intended to be sold individually or in bound albums (Adolphe Giraudon, Catalogue de l'œuvre de Jules Dalou Chartres, 1904), and a percentage of the sales was donated to Dalou's heir, his daughter Georgette."
A very rare example of a photographic catalog of an artistic work, the first for Jules Dalou.
