[SAND (George)]

Manuscript copy of the theatrical version of François le Champi.

[circa 1849]

In-8 (200 x 160 mm), brown half-percaline, smooth spine, untrimmed; jaws slightly split (19th-century binding).

Manuscript copy of the very first version of the theatrical adaptation of François le Champi.

An autograph note by the actor François-Joseph-Philoclès Regnier (1807-1885), known as Regnier, indicates that the volume was sent to him by George Sand, and that it is the first version of the play to be performed at the Odéon theater.
This precious manuscript was a gift from George Sand to Regnier, who played François in the final performances of the play at the Odéon (1877). The manuscript was bound for her library.

The manuscript, which is only written on the rectos of the leaves, opens with some very interesting Notes pour les Acteurs et le Théâtre, probably unpublished, giving indications on the characters' costumes, sometimes precise, sometimes left “at will” (elegant peasant dress at will; peasant costume at will).
