“[Le Dîner du Bon Bock] was founded by the engraver Émile Bellot, who had served as the model for Manet's painting Le Bon Bock (1873). The dinner was held for over fifty years, starting in 1875. It brought together poets, musicians, songwriters and painters on the second Tuesday of each month. It was interrupted only during the summer months. It was suspended during the 1914-18 war and then resumed on a bimonthly basis.
We find guests who also took part in the Villains Bonhommes dinners, which ended in 1873 [...]”.
These three fully lithographed albums contain illustrations, sketches, poems, songs, dedications and bon mots from the participants, collected in the style of a visitors' book, including André Gill, Albert Mérat, Étienne Carjat, Charles Monselet, Léon Cladel, Paul Arène, Auguste Creissels, Maurice Rollinat, Alexandre Ducros, Coquelin cadet, Julien Girardin and Edouard's brother Gustave Manet.
There were also illustrations and sketches by Paul Tavernier, Alexandre Ferdinandus, Henri Pille and Frédéric Régamey.
The first album was printed in 200 copies (this one numbered and signed in ink by Bellot), the second in 500 copies. The print run of the last volume is not specified. The second volume contains Manet's famous portrait of Bellot.
