Hieroglyphic prints.
[19th century]
10 sheets of laid paper, various sizes between 530 x 160 mm and 175 x 110 mm; a few small holes, stains and small tears.
Beautiful and rare set of hieroglyphic engravings.
This practice was used from the early 19th century by archaeologists and researchers to record hieroglyphs. They affixed strips of damp paper to the walls of temples, tombs or statues, following the shape of the inscriptions. These were used to decipher the hieroglyphs, while keeping life-size traces for archival purposes.
This production can be compared with that conserved in the Emile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-1879) collection at the BnF, which contains prints on laid paper, some of them watermarked JHS. The paper used is very similar to that of the stamps we are presenting, also on laid paper, with a partial watermark starting with the letter J and probably the beginning of an H.
