Croquis d’animaux d’après nature. Reproductions de dessins préhistoriques représentant des Equidés quaternaires complétés sans en altérer l’exactitude. Trois animaux fabuleux.
[Dijon (?), circa 1890]
Oblong in-12 drawing book (145 x 205 mm), unbleached cloth, smooth spine; a few small stains (Contemporary binding).
Attractive collection of watercolor drawings of equids and other animals by Henry de La Cuisine (d. 1891), artist, entomologist and lawyer from Dijon.
The focus is on equids, some of them prehistoric: 13 horses, 8 zebras, donkeys and hybrids, as well as 7 dogs (with a fragment of a copied letter and a signed autograph letter from breeder Jean-Emmanuel Le Couteulx de Canteleu (1827-1910)), 4 lions, 3 fabulous animals including a dragon (according to rumors circulating in Dijon), 3 ducks, ducks and ducklings, as well as a tiger, a monkey, a toucan, a seahorse and a cat.
Other sketches and drawings include a portrait of the Sire de Grundval, a landscape with a tower, and La Belle Syren (a portrait of a woman as a mermaid).
Fascinating artistic production by the mysterious Henry de La Cuisine.
