[FLOWERS AND NATURE]

RAPIN (René)

Hortorum libri 4. Editio altera.

Paris, Mabre-Cramoisy, 1666.

In-12 (145 x 95 mm), yellowed fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, gilt coat of arms in center, crowned numeral at corners, spine decorated with the same crowned numeral, red edges; jaws rubbed, one split, one corner restored (Period binding).

A famous poetic work on gardens, first published in 1665. It features a handsome frontispiece engraved by François Chauveau.
Divided into four sections, flowers, woods, waters and fruits, this poem in Latin is followed by an index of the plants mentioned.

A charming copy bearing the double arms and double crowned numeral of Julie d'Angennes, Duchesse de Montausier (1607-1671) and her husband Charles de Saint-Maure, Duc de Montausier (1610-1690).
This poem on nature and flowers had a special place in the couple's library, and must have resonated with their love story. Indeed, in 1641, Julie d'Angennes had received from her future husband the Guirlande de Julie, a collection of 62 madrigals composed by some nineteen of the great names in poetry of the time, produced by the famous master writer and calligrapher Nicolas Jarry. The subject of each madrigal was a flower, illustrating one of Julie's qualities, each beautifully painted by Nicolas Robert.
