Lyon, 1865-1866.

3 journals in one volume; worn binding, marginal stains, two issues of the Journal de Guignol are missing (period binding).

Superb collection of the first two years of the Journal de Guignol, its illustrated supplement La Galerie du Journal de Guignol, and all that appeared in its cousin the Journal de Gnafron founded by one of its former members.

The first two years of the Journal de Guignol were his first series (1865-1866). A fervent republican, it was banned on 20 November 1866 by the Imperial Court of Lyon. It reappeared in September 1872 before being banned again in February 1873.
This collection contains issues 1 (30 April 1865) to 83 (2 December 1866), excluding issues 49 and 70, and, bound at the head of the volume, the 5 illustrated supplements to the Galerie du Journal de Guignol published following the first five issues.

The playwright and journalist Stanislas de Charnal (1830-1880) contributed to the Journal de Guignol before leaving to found the Journal de Gnafron. Publication was interrupted when he was sentenced by the Lyon magistrates' court.
This collection contains the 17 issues of this internationalist newspaper, published between 23 July and 12 November 1865.

A rare satirical journal from Lyon, it bears witness to republican and internationalist opposition under the Second Empire.
