Della novella poesia cioe’ del vero genere e particolari bellezze della poesia italiana. Libri tre.
Vérone, Dionigi Ramanzini, 1732.
In-4 (235 x 175 mm), (6) ff, 402 pp, (1) f., red morocco, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated, interior roulette, edges gilt over marbling; small loss at headcap (Period binding).
First edition of this important treatise in which the poet and printer Giulio Cesare Becelli (1683-1750) defines the characteristics of Italian literature, which was then indistinguishable from Latin literature.
In it, Becelli encouraged poets to imitate i tre lumi della lingua, Dante, Petrarch and Bocaccio. This volume, which anticipates the ideas of Giuseppe Baretti, earned him the title of the first of the Italian pre-romantics.
It is adorned with an engraved vignette to the title, lettering, headpieces and endpapers, as well as the engraved mark of the Accademia Filarmonica di Verona on the last leaf.
A fine copy in contemporary red morocco bearing the label formerly affixed by the bookbinder Padeloup ‘Relieur du Roy, place Sorbonne à Paris’.
This could be an early example of an attempt to pass off an attractive binding as the work of Padeloup. The style of the binding is far removed from the recognised productions of the Relieur du Roy.
