SAINT-HILAIRE (Emile)

Incendie de Salins. Notice historique sur cette ville, son origine, sa position topographique, sa population, son industrie, etc. Suivie du récit de sa catastrophe.

Paris, Au profit des incendiés, 1825.

In-12 (220 x 140 mm), 32 pp. in leaves sewn by the margin, untrimmed, printed cover.

A charming copy of this rare work printed for the benefit of those burnt down in Salins-les-Bains in the Jura.

On 27 July 1825, Salins-les-Bains experienced the biggest fire in its history. After two days of fire, the toll was tragic: 309 houses destroyed, 726 families destitute and 2,580 people homeless.
A national and international solidarity movement was set up to raise funds to help the inhabitants and rebuild the town. This little book bears witness to this.
We have found only two copies in online library directories: at the BnF and at the Archives départementales de Mende.
