Criminal trials and judgments rendered by the Peers and against the Peers.
[January 1753].
In-folio (400 x 260 mm), (242) ff, marbled fawn calf, ornate spine, untrimmed; binding skilfully restored, some scuffing (Period binding).
A very interesting manuscript compiling legal precedents concerning the privileges and prerogatives of the Peers of France, from 1015 to 1665.
It mainly concerns criminal judgments, but also includes other documents such as procès-verbaux de réception, lits de justice, sentences of adjournment, rulings and royal declarations.
The sources used are often indicated in the margin of the copied document, most having been copied from the manuscripts of the illustrious Loménie de Brienne (Bibl. Colbert), and Nicolas de Sainctot (1602-1702).
Finely calligraphed in the 18th century, this volume bears the date January 1753 in the margin of the second leaf. It contains three handwritten plans of parliamentary sittings in the presence of Pairs in connection with the La Valette trial (ff.106, 113 and 123).
This interesting compilation is completed by three printed pieces on the same subjects:
Recueil de pièces concernant les différends des Pairs de France avec les Présidens à mortier du Parlement de Paris. Paris, Coustelier, 1716 (2)-16 pp.
Mémoire des Pairs de France contre les Présidens à mortier du Parlement de Paris. Paris, Coustelier, 1716. (2)-19-(5)-108 pp.
Edit du Roy, portant règlement général pour les Duchez & Pairies. Donné à Marly au mois de may 1711. Paris, Veuve Muguet, 1711. 8 pp.
An interesting specimen of a legal compendium, testifying to the work of compiling trial documents from the Peers of France.
From the Henry de Béthune-Hesdigneul library (1848-1931), with armorial bookplate and label from Château de Souverain-Moulin.
