An amusing record of the important liquor import and distribution business founded by Charles Alexandre Dubuffet (1870-1927), father of the first Art Brut theorist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985).
During his youth, Jean Dubuffet went back and forth between his artistic activities and the wine trade in Paris for the family business.
‘In 1890 Charles Alexandre Dubuffet founded his wine and spirits import and distribution business at 40 rue Juste Viel in Le Havre. Coming from all over the world, the liquids were stored at the port in large cellars and on rue de Phalsbourg (Gabriel Péri). There, the wine is placed in 120 concrete vats lined with glass, then bottled and labelled. They are then distributed in and around Le Havre’ cf. Blog Havrais-dire.
