CHEVALIER D’ÉON (Charles d’Éon de Beaumont, known as)

Autograph draft letter to the Duchesse de Montmorency-Bouteville.

London, 10 December 1787.

2½ pp. folio, written in a single column.

The Chevalière intercedes on behalf of Madame Church, “Dame angloise aussi riche qu’aimable et respectable[an English lady as wealthy as she is amiable and respectable], whose husband wishes to purchase une terre considérable en France [a considerable estate in France]. As the Duchesse had mentioned her intention of selling her estate and the Marquisate of Cailly in Normandy, d’Éon suggests that the property might suit Monsieur Church.

D’Éon adds: “Je joins ici Madame la Duchesse une Epitre de douze pages seulement pour M. L’abbé Prioret.[I enclose herewith, Madame la Duchesse, an epistle of only twelve pages for M. l’Abbé Prioret] [not present with this letter].

The draft is written in a single column, with the margin used for corrections.

Together with, in a wrapper bearing a few lines in the hand of the Chevalier d’Éon, an autograph letter signed by the Duchesse de Montmorency-Bouteville addressed to the Chevalière in London (Paris, 5 April 1789), and an unattributed letter.
