[HANDWRITTEN DICTIONARY]

Catalog of ancient and modern painters.

[circa 1818].

In-8 (220 x 160 mm), reused half vellum, paper-covered boards (period binding).

Important handwritten dictionary containing over 2,000 entries on painters and engravers from the Renaissance to the early 19th century.
It opens with historical notes on the painters of antiquity, and the arts in France, Italy and Germany (painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving), and continues with nearly 500 pages of alphabetically-sorted entries on painters and engravers. On some pages, the manuscript's editor has reproduced the signatures or figures of painters or engravers. The manuscript ends with a few articles and a table of contents. Numerous leaves in the same hand have been added to provide additional notes.

A fascinating summary of the state of knowledge on countless painters and engravers at the beginning of the 19th century.
